Goldenhand reads best not as a standalone book, but as a conclusion of the events that are setup in Clariel, which is a prequel set hundreds of years before Goldenhand. My advice is to definitely read Clariel before reading Goldenhand and think of it as a single story/5(76). I enjoyed Goldenhand, and I will certainly keep buying Garth Nix's Old Kingdom books, but I found that this book suffered a little from a rushed finale. According to a photo posted on Garth Nix's Twitter account, at least part of the story will take place six months after the end of Abhorsen and therefore around the time of The Creature in the Case as Lirael is still getting used to her new hand made by Sameth.   Garth’s many books include the Old Kingdom fantasy series, beginning with Sabriel and continuing to Goldenhand; the sci-fi novels Shade’s Children and A Confusion of Princes; the Regency romance with magic Newt’s Emerald; and novels for children including The Ragwitch, the Seventh Tower series, the Keys to the Kingdom series, and Brand: HarperCollins Publishers.

At long last, fantasy master Nix returns to the story of Lirael. Six months after the close of Abhorsen (), half sisters Sabriel and Lirael, Abhorsen and Abhorsen-in-Waiting, respectively, stand in Death. Their quarry: Chlorr of the Mask.
